On the 5th June 1944 the 20th Fighter Group was assigned the role of escorting the ships of the D-Day landing force. This task would last until the 11th June 1944. The reasoning behind this assignment was that the P-38 Lightning flown by the group would be easily identifiable to the anti-aircraft gunners aboard the ships below. Shipping lanes were carefully planned as were the air routes above them. The map below shows the routes assigned to both shipping and the supporting aircraft.
